A knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure that involves replacing a damaged, worn or diseased knee with an artificial joint. It's a common operation for those suffering from arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis.
A knee replacement is typically considered when the knee joint is worn or damaged to the extent that mobility is severely limited and pain is constant, even while resting. The most common cause is arthritis, but knee damage can also result from injury or infection.
Knee replacement surgery involves removing the damaged cartilage and bone from the surface of the knee joint and replacing it with a man-made surface of metal and plastic. The surgery aims to provide a new, smooth cushion for the knee joint and a functioning joint that does not cause pain.
The surgery itself takes about 1 to 2 hours. The artificial joints used in knee replacement are designed to last many years. With the improvements in surgical techniques and prosthetics, most knee replacements can be expected to last over 15 years.
Recovery from a knee replacement typically involves a stay in the hospital, physical therapy, and at-home care. Physical therapy is a crucial part of successful recovery. Starting from the day after surgery, a physical therapist will guide you through exercises designed to help you regain strength and range of motion in your knee.
Physical therapy will initially focus on moving the knee joint to help promote blood flow, reduce swelling, and begin regaining mobility. As your recovery progresses, the exercises will gradually become more challenging to help restore strength and improve mobility.
Most people experience a significant reduction in knee pain and a substantial improvement in their ability to perform common activities of daily living after knee replacement. However, extreme activities such as running or contact sports are generally not recommended.
Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are some of the most important things you can do to protect your new knee and ensure it functions optimally for many years to come. Our dedicated team of experts is here to guide and support you throughout your journey, providing the highest standard of care.

Excellent office, above and beyond service! All people work as a TEAM. Karina is a jewel to this place: friendly, nice and supportive. All people make you feel in a Spa, not in a doctor's office in it's usual sense (where you want to leave asap). Eros is a very knowledgeable and helpful (for any questions you get answers in a professional manner - he knows what he is doing and does an excellent job ). Grateful to Dr.Inna Kouperman MS,PT,who managed to organize her office in such a manner. The name Excel Physical Therapy says it all! Everybody knows that the Front desk is the Face of the office. So, I have to mention Tamara, who is always reminding me about appointment by phone and also greets with the smile and friendly face. I would greatly recommend this place to all people and would give more than 5 stars!!! Love you all!

I have been coming for 1 month. When I 1st came I could not even walk a block without having to stop because my legs, back & feet were killing me. I have diabetic neuropathy in my feet going to my calves as well. I have been having tens unit & hot stone therapy on my feet & calves and it is FANTASTIC. I have also been doing the bicycle (started at 5 minutes and now I can do 15 minutes) and balance & stretching for my calves & thighs. Inna is a MIRACLE WORKER. Last week after I left her office, i went walking from Brighton 3rd St. to 1 block short of Coney Island Ave. Then I turned down the block to Brighton Beach Ave. I walked all the way down to Brighton 1st St. without any PAIN or TROUBLE WITH MY FEET. Inna Kouperman Of EXCEL PHYSICAL THERAPY is the ABSOLUTE BEST and I RECOMMEND HER HIGHLY.. I can't wait to see what the next months progress brings !!!!!

Inna is just a know it all physical therapist, from my knee to my shoulder injury, she was able to help me heal my injuries. She takes her time and every time there is a different type of excercise or massage applied to the injured area. Can't say enough good things about her staff especially coming from different places like One n One where they do dverything repeatedly and nothing gets done.
