The Gait, Coordination and Balance Training at Excel Physical Therapy addresses problems with decreased mobility, balance and stability. The focus of the program is to strengthen weak muscles, improve ankle proprioception and re-train vestibular system. Balance training helps prevent ankle re-injury, reduces risk of ligament sprain and prevents falls in elderly. The goal of the program is to empower patients to be more independent and injury free.
Gait, balance and coordination are achieved through coordinated work of muscle strength, ankle proprioception, vestibular system and vision.
Gait is one’s ability to move through space, while proprioception tells the body where it is in space. It plays a big role in self-regulation, coordination, posture and body awareness.
Injuries or chronic medical conditions that affect muscles, nerves, and brain may impair proprioception, walking and overall body’s ability to balance and stabilize. Examples of medical conditions include leg or ankle fracture, pain, arthritis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, herniated disc, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, knee or hip replacement. Patients may experience difficulty with standing on one foot, walking in a straight line, climbing stairs or walking on uneven surfaces. They may develop fear and anxiety of falling and will avoid physical activity and going outside much.
Muscle weakness may change a person's normal walking stride. To improve gait or walking, we may suggest the use of a walker or cane, as well as ankle or knee brace for joint support.
Along with treating an underlying condition, such as pain, swelling and muscle weakness, we implement balance exercises with balance board, BOSU, stepper and foam, standing on one leg with eyes open and closed, going up and down steps.
It is important to note that most gait and balance impairments can be improved with physical therapy, the use of appropriate assistive devices, medication and stretching exercises. All of these elements are designed to help the individual adapt to his or her new circumstances.

Excellent office, above and beyond service! All people work as a TEAM. Karina is a jewel to this place: friendly, nice and supportive. All people make you feel in a Spa, not in a doctor's office in it's usual sense (where you want to leave asap). Eros is a very knowledgeable and helpful (for any questions you get answers in a professional manner - he knows what he is doing and does an excellent job ). Grateful to Dr.Inna Kouperman MS,PT,who managed to organize her office in such a manner. The name Excel Physical Therapy says it all! Everybody knows that the Front desk is the Face of the office. So, I have to mention Tamara, who is always reminding me about appointment by phone and also greets with the smile and friendly face. I would greatly recommend this place to all people and would give more than 5 stars!!! Love you all!

I have been coming for 1 month. When I 1st came I could not even walk a block without having to stop because my legs, back & feet were killing me. I have diabetic neuropathy in my feet going to my calves as well. I have been having tens unit & hot stone therapy on my feet & calves and it is FANTASTIC. I have also been doing the bicycle (started at 5 minutes and now I can do 15 minutes) and balance & stretching for my calves & thighs. Inna is a MIRACLE WORKER. Last week after I left her office, i went walking from Brighton 3rd St. to 1 block short of Coney Island Ave. Then I turned down the block to Brighton Beach Ave. I walked all the way down to Brighton 1st St. without any PAIN or TROUBLE WITH MY FEET. Inna Kouperman Of EXCEL PHYSICAL THERAPY is the ABSOLUTE BEST and I RECOMMEND HER HIGHLY.. I can't wait to see what the next months progress brings !!!!!

Inna is just a know it all physical therapist, from my knee to my shoulder injury, she was able to help me heal my injuries. She takes her time and every time there is a different type of excercise or massage applied to the injured area. Can't say enough good things about her staff especially coming from different places like One n One where they do dverything repeatedly and nothing gets done.
